TikTok is a tale of two apps. The Chinese company, Bytedance, released a video-sharing social network app called Douyin in 2016. That app still exists separately in China. They named the international version of their app TikTok when they released it in 2017. Much of TikTok's Western audience initially followed Musical.ly, which Bytedance merged into TikTok in 2018. Although TikTok and Douyin feature similar user interfaces and features, they are not identical, being customized for their respective markets.
TikTok has become exceptionally popular in recent years, particularly with the younger Millennials and Generation Z. It hasn't grown without controversy, however. For example, then-President, Donald Trump, threatened to ban TikTok in the United States in 2020 unless Bytedance let an American company, like Microsoft, buy TikTok in that country. A proposed ban was, however, blocked by a federal judge. In addition, despite TikTok being very popular with India's youth, that country's government banned the app in June 2020 due to a border clash between India and China. Its ban became permanent in January 2021.
Neither TikTok nor its forerunner, Musical.ly, provide many statistics publicly. For example, it is much harder to find follower lists than for most other social networks. However, with such a convoluted history, it is not too challenging to discover quite a few TikTok statistics that others have independently collated.

- Frequently Asked Questions
1. TikTok Users Spend More than 850 Minutes Per Month on the App
According to Statista, US TikTok users average 858 minutes per month on the app. This statistic gives information on monthly TikTok app user engagement in the United States in March 2020.
If you examine the data from October 2019 to March 2020, you will note a considerable increase in the time that the average TikTok user spent on the app. Usage grew from an average of 442.9 minutes per month in October 2019 to 526.1 minutes in November, 561.2 minutes in December, 680 minutes in January 2020, 731.6 minutes in February, and 858 minutes in March 2020.
2. TikTok now has 1 Billion Monthly Active users (January 2022)
As of January 2022, TikTok had 1 billion Monthly Active users worldwide!
In a December 2019 Statista survey, 23 percent of respondents stated that they had used or seen videos posted on TikTok. Conversely, 44% indicated that they hadn't, while 33% claimed to have never heard of TikTok. However, more U.S. internet users used TikTok in 2020 during the COVID pandemic, so these percentages now probably understate the actual situation.
3. 3 Billion Installations
TikTok has been installed on devices over 3 billion times worldwide. It passed the one billion-milestone in February 2019 and the two billion-figure in April 2020. It reached three billion in Mid-2021. TikTok became only the fifth non-gaming app to reach the 3-billion level and the first not owned by Facebook (now Meta).
4. 167 Million TikTok Videos Watched in an Internet Minute
In August 2021, Statista collated online media usage for an "internet minute" worldwide. In that time, people consume hundreds of thousands of hours of content and send, scroll, and upload millions of messages, emails and texts. Amongst these statistics, Statista found that TikTok users watch 167 million hours of videos on the app in a sample minute.
5. Entertainment Most Popular Category on TikTok by Hashtag Views
As of July 2020, the most popular content categories on TikTok all had over two billion views, according to Statista. The most viewed content category on the app was entertainment content. Presumably, this category includes all those lip-synching videos. The second most viewed content category was dance.
The most popular categories overall are:
- Entertainment – 535 billion hashtag views
- Dance – 181 billion
- Pranks – 79 billion
- Fitness/sports – 57 billion
- Home reno/D.I.Y. – 39 billion
- Beauty/skincare – 33 billion
- Fashion – 27 billion
- Recipes/cooking – 18 billion
- Life hacks/advice – 13 billion
- Pets – 10 billion
- Outdoors – 2 billion
While entertainment and dance videos monopolize TikTok users' time and interest, it is clear that they are willing to spend time watching videos on a broader range of topics nowadays.
6. 2nd Most Popular iPhone App Downloaded in 2020
Although monthly app downloads vary greatly, TikTok took second place in the list of most downloaded iPhone apps for 2020. The only app with more downloads was, perhaps unsurprisingly during the first year of COVID, Zoom. TikTok even achieved more downloads on Apple's mobile platform than Facebook, Messenger, Gmail, Netflix, YouTube, and Instagram.
This was the second consecutive year where TikTok performed well on the iOS platform, having been the fourth most popular app in 2019.
7. Most Popular iPhone App Downloaded in the U.S. in 2021
Apple has released charts for the most downloaded free and paid apps and games in the United States across 2021. TikTok topped the Top Free Apps list, followed by YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook.
8. Most Popular Overall App Downloaded Globally in 2020 and 2021
When you add both Apple and Android downloads, TikTok surged ahead of all other apps in 2020, with global downloads of 850 million. This compares to second-placed WhatsApp's 600 million downloads. TikTok's figures include downloads of Douyin in China (which accounts for about a quarter of overall downloads.) Notably, TikTok also topped United States app downloads, at 89 million, despite then-President Trump's threat of banning it. Perhaps even more surprisingly, with 120 million downloads, TikTok was the most popular app downloaded in India, despite being prohibited from July 2020 onwards.
TikTok reached its peak for downloads in Q1 2020, when it was downloaded 318 million times, according to Sensor Tower. Monthly peak downloads occurred in March 2020 – the first month of widespread Coronavirus lockdowns.
According to Sensor Tower, in their 2021 year-end review, TikTok racked up 745.9 million installs across both app stores in 2021. This was down 24% year-on-year from 980.7 million installs in 2020, reflecting TikTok's forced departure from India, but this was still enough for TikTok to once again top the download stats in 2021. Facebook came second in SensorTower's 2021 data.

Apptopia has released charts confirming that TikTok was again the world's most loaded app in 2021 when combining iOS and Google Play results, although this time Instagram came runner-up in their stats. TikTok also held the top position for U.S. downloads.
9. 150+ Countries
According to Apptrace, the TikTok app is currently available in 141 countries. It is in the top 10 overall in 124 of these countries and in the top 50 in 140 of them.

Source: apptrace.com
However, the official TikTok Creator Marketplace now claims that TikTok is available in over 150 markets and is one of the most downloaded apps in 40+ countries.
10. 75 (or 39 or 35+) Languages
TikTok has truly entered the international stage and is arguably now available in 75 languages.
There have been discrepancies in reports of the number of languages that TikTok came in for some time. TikTok's support stated that "TikTok is currently available in 39 languages. You can change the language displayed in your TikTok app anytime." TikTok has since removed that statement.
The official TikTok Creator Marketplace now says that TikTok is available in 35+ languages. However, it is possible, with TikTok now being banned in India, that TikTok has removed support for some regional Indian dialects.
TikTok provides the writer of this article with a choice of 36 languages in the Settings section of his iOS app.
While there are multiple conflicting reports on this statistic, we can agree that the app is now truly international.
11. Highest Social Media Engagement Rates Per Post
Recent Upfluence data shows better engagement rates across different follower levels for Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. TikTok has considerably more engagement than either of the other two networks at all follower levels. For example, Upfluence found micro-influencers had engagement rates of 17.96% on TikTok, 3.86% on Instagram, and 1.63% on YouTube. At the other extreme, mega-influencers had engagement rates of 4.96% on TikTok, 1.21% on Instagram, and 0.37% on YouTube.
If you isolate the fitness sector, Upfluence found that although there weren't all that many TikTok fitness influencers, they had the highest average engagement rate across platforms – 9.3% compared to Instagram (2.9%), YouTube (0.7%), and Facebook (0.5%).
12. Over 200 Million TikTok Users in India When it Was Banned in 2020

Source: Yashvi Jethi/shutterstock.com
India is another populous country whose youngsters were attracted to TikTok. TikTok had amassed more than 200 million users in India by mid-2020 before the government chose to ban it for political reasons. As we have seen above, it was still the top downloaded app in the country in 2020. Every month between July 2019 and June 2020, TikTok was downloaded more in India than anywhere else.
13. Highly Popular in Many Asian Countries
TikTok's support has grown dramatically in most Asian countries. It is particularly beloved in Indonesia (87.5 million users), Vietnam (39.7 million), Thailand (35.6 million), and the Philippines (33.0 million). TikTok has a total reach of 217.7 million in Southeastern Asia, 58.3 million in Western Asia, 25.2 million in Eastern Asia, 14.6 million in Southern Asia, and 6.3 million in Central Asia. These numbers only consider users aged 18 and above, and there are undoubtedly many TikTok users younger than that.
Many young users have used TikTok for political activism. For example, they used it in Indonesia to protest a controversial new labor law.
14. 600 Million Active Daily Users in China
Active daily users in China (mainly of the Douyin version) now exceed 600 million. Douyin has established itself as the largest knowledge, culture, and art platform in China. This figure dates back to August 2020, and TikTok doesn't appear to have yet released more recent data about their Chinese usage.
15. TikTok's Highest Reach (for Adults) is in Saudi Arabia
Somewhat surprisingly, TikTok's has its highest reach (for those aged 18+) in the Arab world. TikTok is seeing phenomenal growth across the Gulf Cooperation Council (G.C.C.), with the app ranking among the top downloads in regional Apple and Google Play Stores. TikTok's highest overall (adult) reach is in Saudi Arabia (78.3%), Kuwait (72.5%), and U.A.E. (68.6%). Qatar takes up the eighth position with a 55.0% reach. In comparison, the U.S.A.’s TikTok reach is 46.5%.
Of course, this ignores the vast number of younger TikTok users, but TikTok's ad tools only publish data for audiences 18+.
16. Between $800M and $1B Purchase Price
Although nobody has ever publicly disclosed the exact purchase price Bytedance paid for Musical.ly, most pundits estimate that it was in the range of $800 million to $1 billion.
17. 200 Days to Develop
It took 200 days for the Chinese development team to create the original version of Douyin / TikTok.
18. 1 Million Videos Views per Day in First Year
Within a year of TikTok's development, it had already reached the milestone of 1 million views per day.
19. 136.6 Million Fans –TikTok Record
@charlidamelio, American dancer and social media personality Charli D'Amelio is now TikTok's most successful account, with 136.6 million fans as of March 2022. She took over the coveted Number 1 position from the previous leader Loren Gray on Mar 25, 2020. She had 41.3 million followers when Charli passed her.
However, Senegalese TikToker, Khaby Lane, is closing in on D'Amelio and currently has 124.9 million followers.
20. 72 Million Fans – Douyin Record
As of July 2021, the Chinese male actor Chen He was the most followed celebrity on Douyin, having amassed nearly 72 million fans in China. The second place belongs to actor and singer Andy Lau, and model and actress Dilireba Dilmurat take the third spot.
In June 2021, Chen Xiang was the leading influencer on Douyin, with almost 64 million fans in China, followed by Ares Cheng and his wife. The third place belonged to the most popular salesman of beauty products - Austin Li Jiaqi.
21. 2014 – Muscal.ly Launch Year
The first prototype of Musical.ly was released in April 2014, and the official version was launched in August of that year. After initially designing it as an online self-learning platform, Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang took about six months to build the product. Unfortunately, this did not gain traction, so Zhu and Yang shifted their focus to a platform that incorporates music and video in a social network.
22. 2016 – TikTok / Douyin Launch Year
The Chinese company, Bytedance launched Douyin in September 2016. They branded it TikTok when they entered the international market in September 2017, but they still keep the original name in their home country.
23. $110 Million Estimated Monthly User Spending
TikTok's earnings have risen proportionately with its increase in popularity. According to Sensor Tower data, TikTok was the top-grossing non-gaming app worldwide for February 2021, with more than $110 million in user spending, 1.9 times its revenue in February 2020. Later in the year, Sensor Tower announced that TikTok was the top-grossing app worldwide for 2021, although it only came in fourth place on Google Play in terms of revenue, after Google One, Piccoma, and Disney+.
24. Nearly 80% of Revenue Comes From China
Approximately 79 percent of TikTok's revenue was from Douyin in China, followed by 8 percent from the United States. This is a significant change from a few years ago, before the arrival of ads, where 42% of revenue came from the United States, but this excludes income from the app's Chinese Android version. From May to July 2020, Chinese revenue was as high as 89% of the app's total revenue.
25. $19 Billion Gross Profit in 2020
ByteDance's gross profit rose 93% to $19 billion in 2020, according to a memo to staff. This was from a more-then-doubled revenue of $34.3 billion. Despite this, the company incurred a $2.1 billion operating loss from January to December 2020. This was partly due to higher expenses incurred from share-based compensation to workers. Its net loss for 2020 totaled $45 billion, due mainly to an accounting adjustment to meet International Financial Reporting Standards.
26. Over $500 Million Spending on TikTok in a Quarter

Source: sensortower.com
In earlier versions of this post, we celebrated how by February 2020, TikTok had reached a total lifetime user spending of $US300 million in Google Play and the App Store. This was up considerably from the $US50 million spent on TikTok at the end of October 2018 (before TikTok introduced advertising).
However, TikTok users soon dwarfed all these numbers. Since Q2 2020, user spending has exceeded $300 million every quarter, with consumers spending $535 million via their TikTok app in Q2 2021 alone. Consumer spending in TikTok has now surpassed $2.5 billion globally, a feat only previously achieved by Tinder, Netflix, YouTube, and Tencent Video.
27. More Than 90% on Android Devices
Echoing Android's smartphone market dominance, more than 90% of the TikTok downloads have been made to Android devices. The sole exception comes in the U.S.A., where there are more iOS users.
The vast majority of India's TikTok fans used the Android version of the app.
28. Nine Out of Ten TikTok Users Use the App Multiple Times Daily
According to official TikTok statistics, its users are loyal and keep on returning to the app. Indeed, 90% of users use the app multiple times per day.
29. Nearly 1,000 Apps Totaling 1.3 Billion Downloads Related to TikTok

Source: sensortower.com
Sensor Tower has noted how TikTok has spawned numerous other related apps. As a result, more than 900 apps now exist, hoping to capitalize on TikTok's popularity, with more than two-thirds of those having launched since January 2020.
Nearly half of the apps enable consumers to download videos to their devices. Other common app categories are analytics on followers and hashtags, and keyboard/font alternatives.
30. CapCut is the 5th Ranked Video Player / Editor in the U.S.A.
SimilarWeb ranks Bytedance's app CapCut - Video Editor as #5 in its list of free video players/editors on Google Play in the U.S.A. It holds a similar position in many other markets, including France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. In addition, it tops SimilarWeb's Leader Board for Canada.
31. 102 Million Installs in Europe in 2021

Source: sensortower.com
There were close to 102 million European installs of TikTok in 2021, the most of any non-gaming app. WhatsApp and the rapidly rising Telegram came third. TikTok took in the third-highest revenue in Europe, after Tinder and Disney+, although it was higher than both on Android, where only Google One made more European Revenue.
32. Nearly 18% Engagement Rate for U.S. Influencers
A July 2020 study revealed that U.S. TikTok influencers had a higher engagement rate than the global average. The report stated that U.S. influencers had an average engagement rate of 17.99% compared to international TikTok influencers, who had an engagement rate of 15.86%.
33. 32.5% of U.S. Users Aged 10-19
TikTok's user base still very closely matches that of its predecessor Musical.ly. Most of its U.S. users are young, with 32.5% aged between 10 and 19, according to Statista. A further 29.5% are aged 20-29.
However, Pew Research data suggests that more older people may now use TikTok. Pew Research only incorporated TikTok into their survey of online social platforms in Jan-Feb 2021, so it is too early to see any trends over time here yet. According to their survey, 48% of U.S. adults aged 18-29 say they have used TikTok, compared to 22% of those aged 30-49, 14% of 50–64-year-olds, and 4% of those aged 65+. Unfortunately, they didn't analyze those aged under 18.
Chinese statistics for Douyin suggest that users are aging with the app. In March 2020, 10.1% of users were aged under 18 (down from 10.5% in 2019). The change was even more noticeable for 19-24-year-olds, with 13.3% of users in that age band (down from 18.7%). Numbers were closer for 25-30-year-olds, 16.6% in 2020 (compared to 18.8% in 2019). The big increase came with 31-35-year-olds, who made up 20.6% of the Douyin user base in 2020 (up from 15.6% in 2019). Notably, there were also small increases in the percentages of all other older age groups using Douyin.

G.W.I. asked TikTok users to describe themselves. G.W.I. measured their descriptions compared to the average internet user (who would have scored an IDX of 1.0). 22% of the survey respondents considered themselves a musician or audio creator. This is 19% more than the average internet user, i.e., an IDX of 1.19.
38% of the respondents considered it important for them to get music they care about as soon as it comes out. This was 17% higher than the average internet user, i.e., an IDX of 1.17.
41. Many TikTokers Like to Share Music
Another conclusion from the Q4 2020 G.W.I. survey is that 45% of TikTokers listen to music to share it with friends and family, and 42% support their favorite artists.
42. Justin Bieber Attracted 4 Million Viewers to a TikTok Live Stream
Justin Bieber held a TikTok Valentine’s Day livestream in February 2021. It drew more than 4 million unique viewers over two broadcasts on the Sunday and Monday. It was the first full-length single-artist live performance on TikTok.
43. 1,000,000 Estimated Daily Page Views
TikTok's website reached the milestone of 1,000,000 estimated daily page views on Jan 5, 2019.
44. 59 Alexa Ranking
In early January 2022, TikTok's website had an Alexa ranking of 59 (i.e., Alexa estimates the site to be the 59th most viewed website globally in terms of internet engagement). This compares to an Alexa ranking of 74 in early July 2021, 102 in early March 2021, 412 in early March 2020, 3,225 in early January 2019, and 4,778 in mid-November 2018. This change clearly demonstrates the increased popularity of TikTok in recent times.
45. 2.7 Billion Views for #ThinBlueLine
TikTok's support base is widening – it is no longer just a site for short music videos and lip-synching. For example, the #ThinBlueLine hashtag, featuring law enforcement videos, has received 2.7 billion views. This is a sizable increase from the 2.3 billion views in the 2021 version of this post and a massive increase from the 530.1 million views in 2020 and 37 million views in 2019.
46. Nearly 100 Million App Installs in India in 2020 Despite Being Banned for Half the Year
Although TikTok has always been very popular in its home country, China (albeit as Douyin), India saw the most significant growth externally in 2019 and 2020. It grew so rapidly that the Indian government became concerned enough to ban it for a while in 2019 before banning it again in 2020 because of border disputes between India and China. Despite this, there were still 99 million app installs in India in the first six months of that year before the government implemented the ban. A court later agreed that the ban should be permanent, with TikTok announcing that it would lay off most local employees.
47. 69% of U.S. Teenagers Are Regular TikTok Users

Source: DisobeyArt/shutterstock.com
TikTok very much appeals to the young, although it seems to be keeping its audience as they age. According to a Fall 2021 Survey from Piper Sands, Snapchat is still U.S. teenagers' favorite social media platform (31%). However, Instagram has fallen from No. 2 to No. 3 (24%), with TikTok moving up to second. Additionally, 30% of the teenage respondents named TikTok their favorite platform, just 1% below Snapchat. TikTok adoption is rising — up to 71%, compared to 62% who used the app in Spring 2020. In comparison, 84% of the teenagers used Instagram, 78% Snapchat, 41% Twitter, 34% Pinterest, and just 28% Facebook.
48. ByteDance Valued at $180 Billion +
ByteDance was valued at $180 billion as of late 2020. This compares to a value of $78 billion in November 2018. ByteDance is a privately owned entity, but many are hopefully waiting for its initial public offering (I.P.O.), which investors expected to happen in Hong Kong sometime in 2021.
However, some estimates place Bytedance's value at even larger than that. According to Bloomberg, shares of ByteDance Ltd were trading at a valuation of more than $250 billion in the secondary market in March 2021. The South China Morning Post suggests that the company's valuation could be approaching $400 billion for private-equity investors.
Susquehanna International Group attempted to sell its shares in Bytedance in October 2021, at a price equated to Bytedance being worth more than $400 billion. However, they failed at this price and have since lowered the offer. In addition, another shareholder in ByteDance recently sold equity, giving a valuation of between $360 billion and $370 billion.
49. First Temporary Indian Ban Cost 15 Million New Users
Indian legislators were so concerned about TikTok that they temporarily banned the app in 2019. They were worried that TikTok would expose children to inappropriate content. While that ban didn't last long, it cost the app an estimated 15 million new users.
Of course, in late June 2020, the government imposed a longer-term ban, which the courts have since confirmed can be permanent. Who knows how many potential users TikTok has lost due to this?
50. 20% of Those with Household Income of More Than $75,000 Have Used TikTok
According to Pew Research's 2021 survey on the use of online social platforms by U.S. adults, TikTok is used relatively evenly by people across the income spectrum. 22% of those who earn under $30K claim to have used TikTok, as do 29% of those making $30K-$49,999, 20% of those earning $50K-$74,999, and 20% of those earning $75K+.
According to older research quoted by MarketingCharts, 37% of TikTok's U.S. users come from households with $100,000 or more income.
However, it is also relatively popular with low-income families. 18% of its users claim to be from households earning less than $25,000 per annum. These statistics will be skewed by excluding those under 18 – a large proportion of TikTok's target audience. Also, many lower-income households could well be student flats, poor now, but potentially well-off once they graduate.
51. More Females Use TikTok Than Males in Most Markets
WeAreSocial looked at the gender balance of (adult) TikTok users worldwide. Overall, TikTok has more female followers (56.1%) than males (43.9%). This female dominance is particularly evident in Indonesia (66.0%) and the Philippines (65.9%).
52. 61% of U.S. TikTok Users Are Women
TikTok is noticeably more popular with females than with males, in the U.S. at least. As of March 2021, females accounted for 61% of TikTok's users, with males counting for 39%, according to Statista.
Pew Research's 2021 survey on the use of online social platforms by U.S. adults aged 18 and over indicates that 24% of women and 17% of men have used the platform. Of course, these numbers omit many TikTok users under 18. Still, the 24% figure for adult women is higher than the percentage who have used Twitter (22%), and the 17% figure for adult men is higher than the equivalent figure for male Pinterest users (16%).

53. Arab and Muslim Users Predominantly Male
The most significant location for TikTok users is the Arabian region. Unlike in most other countries, the typical TikTok user in the Middle East is a male in his 20s. Remembering that in most of the world, female TikTok users predominate, the percentage of male users in the following countries is notable:
- Bahrain 61.3%
- Egypt 64.1%
- Kuwait 60.1%
- Oman 66.6%
- Qatar 71.8%
- Saudi Arabia 61.1%
- The United Arab Emirates 70.7%
- Turkey 63.1%
Slightly further afield, the ratio of males to females is even more male-dominated in Pakistan, with 80.7% of the nation's TikTok users male. Indeed 90.5% of Indian TikTok users in December 2019 before the Indian government banned the app were male.
54. Gender Balance of Douyin users Changed Noticeably in 2020
In March 2019, Douyin's Chinese audience had a male bias – 58.7% male to 41.3% female. Over the next year, however, those percentages almost reversed, and by March 2020, only 43% of Douyin users were male, with female users now accounting for 57% of the total.
As of December 2020, around 48.7 percent of Douyin's users were below 30 years old in China.
55. 74% of TikTok's Users Were Active in December 2019
The average person has downloaded many apps to their phone, rarely using them. However, TikTok users continue to use the app once they download it. According to App Ape statistics, 22.6% of users actively used it for at least 2/3 of the month. Indeed, only 26% of those who had downloaded TikTok failed to use it during December 2019, meaning that 74% used it at least once.
56. TikTok's Users Are Aging with the App
There is no doubt that TikTok is extremely popular with teenagers worldwide. However, there is now some evidence that its user base is aging. People aren't just giving up on TikTok because they believe they have outgrown it. This is particularly evident in some regions. In countries such as China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and the U.A.E., membership among 25–34-year-olds is higher than among 16-24 year-olds.
57. Activities of 460,000 Families Shared on Douyin in 2019

The most popular profession shown as the subjects of Chinese videos were teachers, followed by nurses and firefighters.
59. 3rd Fastest Growing Brand of 2020 / 6th of 2021

Source: morningconsult.com
When Morning Consult created their Fastest Growing Brands 2020 report, they named TikTok the third fastest growing brand after Zoom and Peacock. Morning Consult observed that nearly every brand that occupies a spot on the Fastest Growing Brands list was meaningfully connected to pandemic-related behavior. Notably, six of the 20 Fastest Growing Brands were involved in video streaming: Peacock, TikTok, HBO Max, Twitch, Tubi T.V., and Pluto TV.
With Peacock appealing more to older generations, TikTok was the second-fastest-growing brand of 2020, behind just Zoom, for Generation Z and Millennials. Perhaps surprisingly, TikTok even made the list (in tenth place) for Generation X.
Although TikTok's growth has fallen slightly from those giddy highs, it still managed to take sixth place in Morning Consult's Fastest Growing Brands 2021 report. Another streamer, Paramount +, took the top spot in 2021.
Notably, TikTok has fallen out of the Top 15 Gen Z list but takes 4th spot for Millennials and Gen X.
60. Children Aged 4-15 Average 75 minutes Per Day on TikTok
Digital safety app maker Qustodio reports that kids aged four to 15 now spend an average of 75 minutes per day watching TikTok videos, alongside their 68 minutes per day watching YouTube Kids / 64 minutes watching standard YouTube videos. This survey was conducted across the U.S., U.K., and Spain from January to December 2020, compared with the 2019 calendar year results.
However, when you look at the U.S. alone, kids aged four to 15 now spend an average of 87 minutes per day watching TikTok videos.
61. TikTok is the Most Popular Social Media App for Kids at 41%
Another finding from the Qustodio 2021 Annual Report on Children's Digital Habits is that TikTok is now the most popular social app for kids aged four- to 15-year-olds globally. YouTube is not included in this statistic. Instead, Qustodio considers it an online video app (like Netflix and Disney Plus).
TikTok still hasn't taken over the youngsters of the United States, however. Whereas 41% of global kids use TikTok and 39% Facebook, in the U.S., the preference is reversed; 41% use Facebook and 38% TikTok. Spanish kids love TikTok, however, with 55% of them using the app.
One notable change between 2019 and 2020 was a comparative reduction in the use of Instagram by kids. Instagram had been the most popular social media app among kids in 2019, ahead of Facebook. Indeed, Instagram's popularity dropped 43% year on year.
62. TikTok was the Most Blocked Social Media App by Parents
Quastodio also observed that just as TikTok became the most used social media app for kids in 2020, it also rose to become the most blocked by parents globally and across all surveyed regions. TikTok was followed by Instagram, Snapchat, and then Facebook in that order for parental blocking.
